My Psych Teacher Business Plan

So, I’m writing a business plan for My Psych Teacher University, operated by My Psych Teacher, LLC. To start, I am working on the organizational definition.

Read the following and comment on this post to tell me what you think. What suggestions do you have? Is it readable? Does it make sense? Are you starting to understand the vision? Keep in mind that this definition is under construction.

1.0 Executive Summary

cropped-istockphoto-658223374-612x612-2.jpgMy Psych Teacher University (MPTU) is a fully online educational community offering flexible interactive courses in psychology, specializing in mental health and other topics under the umbrella of psychology. Our courses help students transform their mental health journey from anywhere in the world at their own pace. It is innovative and impactful learning in a collaborative environment offering a dynamic and constantly-evolving course catalog.

We are inspired by a love of teaching, the desire to reach home bound students in the wake of COVID 19, and the will to empower those coping with mental illness to achieve mental health.

Not only is this a good fit for us as a connoisseurs of mental health services, it is extremely timely with students taking to online learning everyday as COVID 19 has closed schools across the nation and around the world. These students are part of our worldwide target market, which includes students coping with mental illness and the service providers who guide them.

The ultimate goal of My Psych Teacher University is to develop well-rounded psychology scholars (equipped to lead and serve in the world today), by being a one-stop university for all mental health needs, including courses, resources, therapist referrals, teletherapy,  professional psychology licensing, etc., but at this time MPTU mainly offers private mental health education. MPTU is positioned as a low-cost university with excellent courses and educational opportunities.

1.1 Objectives

The objectives over the next three years for My Psych Teacher University (MPTU) are the following:

  • Achieve enrollment revenues of approximately $2.1 million by year three.
  • Expand by offering accredited, two and four year degree granting programs.
  • Become the low cost provider of comprehensive mental health education services in the online teaching and learning space.

1.2 Mission

The mission of My Psych Teacher University is to provide high quality, convenient and comprehensive mental health education courses at the lowest cost. The most important aspect of mental health education is empowerment. It is the goal of MPTU to have graduates of our programs with the highest recovery rates of any other competitor in the field of mental health services providers and to exploit that reputation to create greater market share.

My Psych Teacher accomplishes its mission in adherence to the following purposes:

  • Providing a variety of mental-health-focused programs and services;
  • Empowering students to grow where they are planted, through a non-traditional curriculum delivery method; and
  • Offering courses, programs and services that meet students’ needs and prepare them for success in psychology and mental health related roles.

1.3 Keys to Success

My Psych Teacher University stands at a pivotal moment in its brief history. Having achieved an enviable following in it’s first week of existence, the company is ready to expand into the online universe. The firm plans to launch it’s first full semester in the Fall of 2020.

The keys to success over the next three years for MPTU are as follows:

  • Lower costs so that the company’s gross margin increases to 66%.
  • Appoint a cost control officer for each of the new course departments who is responsible to the president and general manager.
  • Institute a comprehensive cost reduction program throughout the company.
  • Strengthen and pursue partnerships and strategic alliances with suppliers so as to further reduce costs.
  • Aggressively pursue contracts with organizations who need our services such as colleges, high schools and mental health agencies.

2.0 Company Summary

My Psych Teacher University was started by a single tutor / teacher – our current founder, Shenica Graham. She saw an untapped potential in the mental health education industry.  This potential was in creating a new low cost position while maintaining competitiveness with larger more established companies on quality.

This strategy would be created through strategic alliances and partnerships with students, teachers, psychologists and psychiatrists with diverse demographics from around the world. The company has seen steady growth in a mature market, which testified to the firm’s viable brand and social media strategy.

2.1 Company History

The company was founded when Shenica Graham, a longtime psychology student and freelance writer of educational content online, sought to go into the psychology teaching business for herself. At the time, there was no low-cost leader in the mental health education industry that was providing comprehensive high-quality mental health education with the most modern teaching techniques (including streaming online courses and live virtual classrooms). This presented an awesome opportunity.

During the past week, MPTU has shown steady growth on social media, and seen a number of new followers. The key to low-cost leadership in this field is through special relationships with students, teachers, mental health professionals, and the mentally challenged.

2.2 Company Locations and Facilities

The company has its original website at http://mypsychteacher.com.

2.3 Company Ownership

The company has one investor, an employee of the the firm. She owns 100% or 1,000 privately owned shares of the company. My Psych Teacher University is incorporated in the state of Iowa and obliged to perform under that state’s rules. By the rules of the company’s charter, no investor can trade, sell or dispose of any shares without first informing the board of directors.

My Psych Teacher University is presently seeking to find new investors to help offset the expenses of its planned expansion. The strategy entails a further issuance of 500 shares to these new shareholders.

3.0 Services *

My Psych Teacher University offers a wide range of services as outlined in the detailed sections below. It is ultimately the  goal of MPtU to develop well-rounded psychology scholars (equipped to lead and serve in the world today), by being a one-stop university for all mental health needs, including courses, resources, therapist referrals, teletherapy,  professional psychology licensing, etc. In this way the company could offer greater perceived value for the customer that he or she could use for their entire mental health career.
The industry is highly competitive with suppliers having a great deal of power in setting and negotiating the prices of their products and services to online schools. In addition, because the customers see the service as undifferentiated and a “commodity” with little value separation between competitors, buyer power is also very high. Finally, the barriers to entry are moderately low, and the large number of competitors in this field, including substitutes (such as in house training at institutions like high schools), mean that the pricing for such services are very competitive. The only way to have an advantage in this industry is a low-cost leadership principal applied aggressively to all aspects of the business.

My Psych Teacher University will hire trained and certified instructors who will provide all of the teaching services.

3.1 Service Description *

My Psych Teacher University provides a wide range of courses and services. These include:

  • Adult and teen oriented anytime online classes for the busy and working individual.
  • High school programs for school districts that do not have their own in-house services.
  • Internet safe courses.
  • Certification courses.
  • Brush up courses.

Each course requires that the student purchase their own reading and studying material and can last up to sixteen weeks for the beginner student. Other courses range from two to eight weeks. Instructors are required to have a certain number of hours each week made available for student questions and issues.

3.2 Competitive Comparison *

The online education industry is highly competitive. Each company within this field has high capital costs, low margins, and a high intensity of competition.

Online learning suppliers have a great deal of power in setting and negotiating the prices of their products and services to online schools. This is due to the fact that the suppliers who absorb the greatest amounts of cash from online schools include these top-ten selected by the eLearning Industry for 2016:

  1. SweetRush
  2. EI Design
  3. Allen Interactions
  4. Allen Comm
  5. Pulse Learning
  6. Obsidian
  7. G-Cube
  8. Designing Digitally
  9. Learnnovators
  10. CommLab India

BusinessWire reports that TutorGroup is worth $1 billion. TutorGroup is the largest English language online education platform in the world.

These companies are more consolidated than the mental health school industry, have deeper pockets, an almost limitless number of substitute customers, and finally they are the single most important supplier to MPTU’s industry.

Therefore, these companies can set whatever price they wish to. It will be MPTU’s strategy to ease this issue by forming special partnerships with potential suppliers through symbiotic relationships and to seek new and unorthodox ways to acquire such supplies. For instance, the company now has an excellent relationship with …, Which provides us with a discount on all fuel purchased. In turn, we provide the company with an expanded avenue of online marketing.

In addition, because the customers see the service as undifferentiated and a “commodity” with little value separation between competitors, buyer power is also very high. Market research conducted between May and … 2020 shows that although the quality and services of online education companies can vary quite a bit, the customer does not perceive this as a serious issue when seeking online education services. In fact, there is still a significant portion of the population that learns from informal sources such as relatives. Additionally, the costs of our services are not cheap, and buyers are willing to search for the most favorable combination of price and acceptable service.

The barriers to entry and exit are moderately low in this industry. Switching costs are virtually non-existent and the costs to entry and exist in the market are low. However, the advantages of producing at high volume and reaping the benefits of economies of scale are quite attractive. Once MPTU becomes a regional player, these economies of scale will work toward the company’s advantage.

The large number of competitors in this field, including substitutes such as in house training at institutions like high schools, mean that the pricing for such services are very competitive. The only way to have an advantage in this industry is a low-cost leadership principal applied aggressively to all aspects of the business.

3.3 Fulfillment

My Psych Teacher University will hire duly trained and certified instructors to provide teaching services.

3.4 Technology

The Internet has revolutionized our abilities to teach. MPTU will remain on the cutting edge by instituting the use of virtual classrooms and remotely Web-accessed study material. The company will continue to seek and implement innovative ways to provide a convenient and more effective teaching environment through technology. The virtual classroom is trending now; and we are positioning ourselves to be the first who will provide such services in the niche of psychology.

3.5 Future Services

4.0 Market Analysis Summary

Just about every individual in the world his needs mental health education at one point or another in their lives. Therefore the potential market for MPTU consists of every person age 18 and above who has an internet connection. We segment this market into a series of groups based on their individual needs and differing demographics. These segments are:

  • Beginner students. Newly diagnosed mental health patients who need to be educated about their condition.
  • Required students. Mental Health patients under court order.
  • Mental health service provider students. Psychologists, counselors, psychiatrists, and other experiences mental health professionals.

Each of these groups has different needs based on mental health and educational experience. They are detailed in the market segmentation section.

4.1 Market Segmentation

Each group has different needs based on mental health and educational experience. Many of our adult learners can only devote time for mental health education at lunch hours and in the evenings when they are not working. We have built classes that meet this need.

For our all of our students, the majority of whom are a diagnosed with a mental illness, we offer online courses that are accessible at anytime during the day or night.

Finally, our mental health professionals segment will require more  technical courses that are comparatively the most detailed and that last the longest.

4.2 Service Business Analysis

This section is covered in the Competitive Comparison section of the Plan.

4.2.1 Competition and Buying Patterns

This industry is highly seasonal. Most of our students attend classes during the fall or spring, with winter being the slowest months. The summer sees a good number of students seeking our services, but not as many as in spring or fall.

Most consumers of mental health education services find their provider via some form of referral, such as another education institution, the state directory of providers, word of mouth, social media, or something else. For this reason, MPTU strives to make as many contacts in the global community as possible.

4.2.2 Main Competitors

Our main competitors are these top-ten selected by the eLearning Industry for 2016:

  1. SweetRush
  2. EI Design
  3. Allen Interactions
  4. Allen Comm
  5. Pulse Learning
  6. Obsidian
  7. G-Cube
  8. Designing Digitally

  10. CommLab India

BusinessWire reports that TutorGroup is worth $1 billion. TutorGroup is the largest English language online education platform in the world.

4.2.3 Business Participants *

The online education industry is fragmented into two types of businesses. The largest group consist of the “mom and pop” type of company that is very local, with low capitalization, and ranges in quality of education from poor to excellent.

The other group consists of a very few regional or national companies such as …  School and …. These competitors are well funded, have excellent facilities and offer high quality services. services

The two companies noted above are MPTU’s major competitors in the Iowa area. These companies often try to buy out smaller competitors and therefore consolidate the market.

My meals for week three will be during breakfast, lunch, and dinner hours, with no snacks before or after a meal. My goal is to eat within a 1,500 calorie per day limit. I will use my lunch hour for devotional time.

I am only going to weigh myself at the end of the week. So this will be a big reveal to show how much weight I can lose in one week.
